When Working with Difficult Material Gets Difficult
Calm Place + BLS
If activation increases — heart racing, chest tightening, feeling flooded or numb — pause. Do not push through.
- Bring your Calm Place to mind
- Do 20-30 bilateral taps (butterfly hug or knee tapping)
- Notice how the system responds
The work will still be here when the system has settled.
Signs to stop for the day
- Dissociation (feeling unreal, detached, watching from outside)
- Overwhelmed by too much emotion/activation, also called flooding
- Physical symptoms (nausea, dizziness, severe headache)
This is not failure. It is the system saying “too much, too fast.” Listen to the signal.
If You Become Overwhelmed
If grounding techniques are not working:
1
STOP
Stop working with the material immediately
2
PHYSICAL RESET
Hold ice cubes, splash cold water on face, or take a cold shower
3
BREATHE
Slow your exhale: breathe in for 4, out for 8. Repeat until settling begins.
4
CONTAIN
Put the overwhelming material in your container
5
MOVE
Walk, stretch, shake out limbs
You have hit material that needs more support. Consider slowing down with this process, or working with a therapist rather than continuing alone.
