Who Recommends EMDR?
EMDR is not a fringe therapy. It is endorsed by the major health bodies that set the standard for evidence-based trauma treatment.
- World Health Organization (WHO) — recommends EMDR as a first-line treatment for PTSD in adults and children
- American Psychological Association (APA) — lists EMDR as a treatment with strong research support for PTSD
- UK National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) — recommends EMDR as a first-line treatment for PTSD
- Australian Psychological Society (APS) — recognises EMDR as an evidence-based treatment for trauma
- International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies (ISTSS) — classifies EMDR as a highly recommended treatment
These recommendations are based on decades of controlled research. EMDR has been studied more rigorously than most psychological treatments — because its unusual features (bilateral stimulation, the eye movement component) attracted both intense scrutiny and intense interest.
